To the listener,
The folk music I grew up with has really taken root in me. All those tunes with their short, repetitive forms and all those dance nights bringing one thing into focus: the polska. Step into that music and you soon discover a whole world.
A world where the interplay between music and dance is paramount and binds the fiddler to a respect for the laws of dancing. This inevitably leads to a struggle between two forces. On the one hand artistic expression, which, in a purely rhetorically way, strives to mold the melody. On the other hand the straitened, instinctive driving energy relentlessly surging forward, always at the same tempo.
In my music for the nyckelharpa I exploit the repetitive nature of the music but extend the form and admit other themes and more variations on these. This music is intended for an inner dance, for journeys of the mind where the suite form enables one to travel further, uninterrupted.
Welcome into the music!
