MUSICANS Daniel Pettersson: Nyckelharpa Daniel Fredriksson: Mandola
I shall never forget the year 1978.
That was when I travelled around with a tape recorder to record what was left of the music of Västerbotten and Southern Lappland.
Things were going badly for this music. No one had asked for it for ages, so it was on its way to oblivion and was following the eldery into the grave. The old folk I met were surprised, but mostly pleased. They gladly and willingly entered into the struggle against obscurity. The music which subsequently emerged from their memories was fantastic and every day I was amazed at how such great music had been doomed to die.
It is therefore not without emotion that I listen to this CD, because you see many of the tunes I came across during that year are included here.
They are the same tunes. But the melodies, which at that time were so close to death, appear here at the centre of pulsating life. Exuberant and full of self confidence. And I rather fancy, in the service of propagation. A musical tradition couldn't be more alive.
